Disaster Recovery System for Dept. of Comm. Tax, U.P.

Department of Commercial Taxes Uttar Pradesh plays a very significant role in the internal resources mobilization of the State Government of Uttar Pradesh. Department has its data centre at NIC. This Data Centre manages all applications run by Commercial Taxes Department, Uttar Pradesh.

Business Challenges:

Commercial Taxes Department plays with a large amount of data and this data is its assets. Commercial Taxes Department has Data Centre at NIC, Lucknow. It had become necessary to ensure the permanent availability of key data and processes regardless of any compromising situation, from server failure to natural disaster. Department wanted to set up Disaster recovery System at its head office in Lucknow that could restore systems and data in the event of partial or complete failure of computers due to natural or technical causes.


Existing infrastructure of Data Centre was analyzed first. Infrastructure’s design of existing Data Centre was analyzed with support of the department. This analysis took around one week. The job was supposed to be done within 3 weeks from then. Two types of clusters were created, application and database clusters. Application cluster was the combination of seven physical systems. Twenty virtual machines were created on this application cluster. Virtual Machines were attached to Network Load Balance (NLB). Four SQL database servers were installed on database cluster. We were into last week of the timeline. Replication of Data Centre’s data in to Data Recovery System was required. Replication was done by log-shipping through FTP. We replicated data from Data Centre to Data recovery System with ease. Job was finished within timeline.
